About Ro Khanna

Rohit "Ro" Khanna is a progressive Democratic Representative from California's 17th Congressional District in Silicon Valley, serving his fifth term since his 2016 election( Born September 13, 1976, to Indian parents in Philadelphia, Khanna is an attorney and self-described "progressive capitalist" who previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the U.S. Department of Commerce under President Barack Obama and taught economics at Stanford University( He is vice chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, serves as ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Cyber, Innovative Technologies and Information Systems, and previously chaired the House Oversight Subcommittee on the Environment( As Environmental Subcommittee chair, Khanna made history by bringing six major fossil fuel company CEOs before Congress to testify under oath about climate disinformation and played a key role in negotiations around the Inflation Reduction Act( He authored the Endless Frontier Act, which formed the basis for the CHIPS and Science bill signed by President Biden, and has championed progressive legislation on Medicare for All, term limits for Supreme Court Justices, and campaign finance reform(

Khanna is known for his advocacy on labor rights, antitrust issues, and housing affordability through his founding of the Congressional Antitrust Caucus and membership in the bipartisan Congressional YIMBY Caucus( As one of only a few members of Congress to refuse contributions from PACs and lobbyists, he has had five bills signed into law and is a strong supporter of labor unionization efforts( In 2025 and 2026, Khanna drew broader national attention through town halls in Republican-held districts and appearances in early-voting presidential states, with several national outlets describing him as a potential contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028(
